A prince meets his princess, and a wingding of a wedding is planned. It was so big, in fact, that the party went on for five full days. That’s how Oktoberfest was born 200 years ago, when Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on Oct. 12, 1810.
While this year’s festival marks the 200th anniversary of the event, it is technically just the 177th Oktoberfest. It was canceled 24 times over the years because of war and cholera epidemics. This year, the party is very much on. Oktoberfest 2010 runs Sept. 18 through Oct. 4, with historic exhibits planned.
